Donation Receipt FAQ
What is required on a donation receipt for tax purposes?
The IRS requires donation receipts to include: the nonprofit's name and address, Tax ID (EIN), donor name and address, donation date, amount or description of donation, and a statement about whether goods or services were provided in exchange.
Does my organization need to be a 501(c)(3)?
For donations to be tax-deductible, your organization must be recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The receipt should include your organization's Tax ID number.
What if we provided goods or services in exchange?
If your organization provided goods or services (like a dinner, merchandise, or event tickets), you must disclose this and provide the fair market value. Only the amount exceeding the value of goods/services is tax-deductible.
